European heavyweights sign up for College Links Invitational

One of the most successful college teams in Europe has committed to play in the 2020 College Links Invitational at St Andrews.

The University of Stirling will enter both men’s and women’s teams in the event, which takes place over the Torrance Course at Fairmont St Andrews from 7-12 June, 2020.

The men’s and women’s teams have been European Universities Champions in four of the last five seasons, while Stirling golfers have enjoyed individual success around the world. The programme has produced nine national champions, eight Curtis Cup players, four Walker Cup players and three British Amateur Champions.

Successful alumni include current Solheim Cup captain and former Open Champion Catriona Matthew and Richie Ramsay, a three-time winner on the European Tour, who won the US Amateur Championship at Hazeltine in 2006 while a Stirling student.

Dean Robertson, High Performance Golf Coach at Stirling, said the College Links Invitational was an exciting opportunity for his players to test themselves against golfers from around the world.

He added: “The College Links Invitational is going to be a terrific event and I’m delighted that our Stirling University teams have a chance to take part. Bringing student athletes from around the world together at the Home of Golf is a fantastic concept.

“The Torrance Course is a layout we’re familiar with. It’s matured into a terrific test of golf and is ideal for a matchplay format. There are lots of risk and reward shots; the greens are fast and true and the closing stretch is incredibly challenging.

“We have a great working relationship with College Links Golf, the tournament organisers, and we know they have agreement in principle from some great teams from around the world.”

Raleigh Gowrie, director of College Links Golf, said: “The University of Stirling is a highly-respected name in both men’s and women’s college golf. Their players have posted impressive results at tournaments around the world and it was always important to us that we could convince them to compete in our event. The invitational is going to be a truly global field but we wanted to make sure Scottish golf is well-represented.

“We’re delighted Stirling has signed up and look forward to announcing more entrants in the next few weeks.”
